Today, when so many pubs and clubs are shutting down, it's easy to forget that they were one of the centres of social life in Hunslet until recently. In the 1930s there were 51 pubs in Hunslet. In those days they were the province of men: women didn’t drink in pubs in 1930s. They used to sit on a bench by the pub "snicket" (side door) or have beer brought back home in a jug.
As well as pubs there were several working men's clubs, such as East Hunslet Liberal Club (Waterloo Road), South Ward Liberal Club , and Hunslet Labour Club (Moor Road).
Many pubs and clubs would organise trips to the seaside, either for the men, or for members' children. East Hunslet Liberal Club would hire two coaches for the children's annual trip to Cleethorpes.
Today there are 17 pubs left in Hunslet. The table below lists Hunslet's pubs in 1851, 1901, the 1930s, and today (a green block shows the pub operated at that time).

A pub has been on this site on Whitfield Way since 1833. It adopted its present name in 1849, probably because of the market gardens in the area. Today's building - a superb example of late Victorian/early Edwardian architecture - was built in 1903. In 1970, Leeds City Council and Tetley's wanted to demolish it as part the redevelopment of the wider area. It was saved following pressure from some planners who lived nearby, and a local councillor. It became a listed building in 1972. The facade has soft-bronze coloured tiles and the entrance hall mosaic floor tiles. The Tap Room is tiled in cream, eau-de-nil and bronze. There is decorated and etched glass throughout the pub, and rich mahogany woodwork.
